FVVC Blitz one for one in Super Series

FVVC Blitz win Vancouver Island Super Series
March 7, 2010

In a Super Series final that put last year's 18U and 17U Provincial Championship clubs against each other the FVVC Blitz prevailed in their first Super Series of the 2010 season. Taking place in gyms across Nanaimo over the March 6-7 weekend the Blitz stormed back after a first set loss to claim the title over Focus Kaboom 2-1 (22-25, 25-17, 15-9).

Last year's 17U Provincial Champion Focus Kaboom (Surrey, BC) set the pace in the first set jumping out to an early 7-4 lead and subsequently forcing FVVC coach Mike Gilray (Team BC Canada Games Beach Gold Medal coach) into a time out at 10-16. Focus maintained their 3 point cushion for the rest of the set wrapping it up 25-22.
As the teams changed side apparently so too did the flow of the game as the start of the second set saw FVVC fly out of the gates with a 4-0 lead. FVVC pushed that lead to 19-12 midway through the set when Focus head coach Alex Seres called his second and final time-out. Immediately following their coaching intervention Focus Kaboom earned the sideout, but the Blitz remained unfazed and put a small run together to finish 25-17. Both teams came out in the third set trading blows before FVVC tightened their grasp on the match by siding out efficiently and holding serve for two consecutive runs of 3 to win the set and the match 15-9.
BCO Black (Vancouver) followed a similar pattern in their win over the Nanaimo Volleyball Club Express by losing the first set before coming back to take the next two. Overcoming a first set injury to their libero and a seemingly insurmountable deficit at 21-24 in the second set, the BCO crew recovered to take the match 19-25, 26-24, 15-9.
