Redmann and VanHuizen eliminated in round of 16 repechage on World Tour beach volleyball circuit

ROME – Christian Redmann and Richard Van Huizen of Toronto saw a strong opening run on the World Tour beach volleyball circuit end on Friday as they were eliminated in the round of 16 repechage of the main draw.

The tournament is the third stop this season but the first of six Grand Slams on the Tour which offer $300,000 in cash prizes.

The loss completed an exhausting week for the Canadian pair which placed ninth at the world championships last and were among the finalists for rookies of the year on the circuit. Redmann and VanHuizen played six matches this week, with all but one going the three-set limit, and finished with a 3-3 record.

On Friday, Redmann and VanHuizen, seeded 24th, fell in the round of 16 repechage to 14th-seed Floria Gosh and Alexander Horst of Austria 21-18, 19-21, 15-11 in 61 minutes. On Friday morning, the Canadians defeated Emiel Boersma and Joppe Paulides of the Netherlands in a must win situation 23-21, 18-21, 15-7 to advance.

Redmann and VanHuizen opened the tournament winning their two qualification matches on Tuesday to advance to the main draw. In their main draw pool, they lost two agonizingly close matches against top-10 seeds before beating the Dutch Friday.
