SAN JUAN, Puerto Rico – Canada advanced to the quarterfinals on Wednesday with an impressive straight sets victory over Colombia at the Pan American Cup men’s volleyball tournament.



The Canadians, ranked 20th in the world, evened their record to 1-1 defeating a young Colombian squad 28-26, 25-16, 25-14. This is the first tournament of the 2010 season for Canada which is ultimately preparing for the world championships this September in Italy.



Dallas Soonias of Red Deer, Alta., one of the top pro players in Europe this winter, led the Canadian attack with 14 points including two service aces. He also led the squad in digs with six. Toon Van Lankvelt of Rivers, Man., added nine points and Canada’s most experienced player, Fred Winters of Victoria, playing in his 139th match for Team Canada, notched eight.



Canada’s head coach Glenn Hoag of Gatineau, Que., was pleased to see his squad bounce back after a five-set loss to Brazil on Tuesday.



“We are starting our international season and playing these games will help us to put things together,” said Hoag. “Colombia played well for a set and a half and then we started to block a little bit better. As I said before this is the start of our preparation for the world championship and teams here play at a very good level”.



Brazil finishes first in pool A with a perfect 2-0 mark followed by Canada and Colombia at 0-2. Argentina has also clinched pool C and is assured a berth in the semi finals while the U.S., and Puerto battle for first spot in pool B later Wednesday.



Canada’s next opponent is still unknown but the quarterfinal matches are slated for 7 p.m. and 9 p.m. (EDT) and will be carried live at mediasports.tv.

Le Canada se qualifie pour les quarts de finale dans la Coupe panaméricaine de volleyball masculin



SAN JUAN, Porto-Rico – Le Canada s’est qualifié pour les quarts de finale, mercredi, avec une impressionnante victoire en trois sets consécutifs contre la Colombie dans la Coupe panaméricaine de volleyball masculin.



Les Canadiens, classés 20es au monde, ont nivelé leur dossier à 1-1 en battant une jeune formation colombienne 28-26, 25-16, 25-14. Il s’agit du premier tournoi de la saison 2010 pour le Canada qui se prépare pour participer ultimement aux championnats du monde en septembre, en Italie.



Dallas Soonias, de Red Deer, en Alberta, un des meilleurs joueurs professionnels en Europe cet hiver, a dirigé l’attaque canadienne avec 14 points, dont deux avec des as au service. Il a aussi été le meilleur de la formation pour les récupérations avec six. Toon Van Lankvelt, de Rivers, au Manitoba, a ajouté neuf points et le joueur le plus expérimenté du Canada, Fred Winters, de Victoria, qui jouait dans son 139e match pour Équipe Canada, en a réussi huit.



L’entraîneur-chef du Canada, Glenn Hoag, de Gatineau, au Québec, était satisfait de voir son équipe rebondir après sa défaite en cinq sets contre le Brésil, mardi.



«Nous commençons notre saison internationale et jouer ces matches nous aidera à établir notre jeu d’ensemble, a dit Hoag. La Colombie a bien joué pendant un set et demi et ensuite nous avons commencé à bloquer un peu mieux. Comme je l’ai dit avant le début de notre préparation pour les championnats du monde, les équipes ici jouent à un très bon niveau.»



Le Brésil a terminé en tête du groupe A avec un dossier parfait de 2-0, suivi du Canada et ensuite de la Colombie à 0-2. L’Argentine a aussi remporté le groupe C et s’est assuré une place en demi-finale tandis que les É.-U. et Porto-Rico s’affrontaient pour le premier rang du groupe B plus tard mercredi.



Le prochain adversaire du Canada est encore inconnu, mais les matches de quarts de finale doivent avoir lieu à 19 h et 21 h (HE) et seront diffusés en direct à mediasports.tv.
