Canada wins first match at Pan Am Cup



ROSARITO, Mexico – Canada’s national women’s volleyball team earned its first victory at the Pan Am Cup on Thursday with a 25-19, 25-18, 25-15 victory over Trinidad and Tobago in its opening consolation playoff round match.



The Canadians, who went 0-4 in round robin play, still have a chance for a fifth place finish if they can with their matches on Friday and Saturday.



In Thursday’s match Sarah Pavan of Kitchener, Ont., was the top scorer in the match with 11 points. Tonya Mokelki of Weyburn, Sask., added nine and team captain Tammy Mahon of Holland, Man., eight. All 12 players on the Canadian team saw some game action.



“We capitalized on our opportunities and stayed steady,” said Mahon. “The win was definitely good for us because we were struggling a bit with our confidence with our up and down play so far. We still have a tendency to let up late in sets and we know we can’t do that against the stronger teams.”



Canada’s next match is on Friday against an opponent yet to be determined.
