EDMOND, Oklahoma – Canada defeated Libya 25-22, 24-26, 25-29, 25-18 on Sunday night to open men’s round robin play at the world championships in sitting the volleyball for athletes with a disability. The 23-country competition is also a qualifying event for the 2012 Paralympic Games.



The men’s team members are Chad Drummond, Austin Hinchey and Doug Learoyd, all of Edmonton, Jose Rebelo of St-Hubert, Que., Kevin Strybosch of London, Ont., Eric Dechaine of St. Lina, Alta., Wilfredo Morewilson of Toronto, Mikael Bartholdy of Calgary and Greg Stewart of Kamloops, B.C.



The Canadian men have a day off Monday and resume action Tuesday with matches against China and Paralympic champions Bosnia-Herzegovina and Wednesday versus the U.S.



On the women’s side, the Canadians lost their round robin opener to the Netherlands 25-13, 25-17, 25-6.



The team members are Chantal Beauchesne of St-Isidore, Ont., Allison Lang of Edmonton and Leaha Hickman of Lashburn, Alta. The other team members are Jolan Brunner of Vermilion, Alta., Danielle Ellis and Jordan Funnel, both of White Rock, B.C., Karen McCoy of Lincoln, N.B., Amber Skyrpan of Wandering River, Alta., and Tanja Hodzic of Vancouver and Krista McDonald.



The Canadians face Lithuania on Monday, Germany and the U.S., on Tuesday and Japan on Wednesday.



The top-three in both men’s and women’s play earn a ticket to the 2012 Paralympics in London.
