Canadian Men Win Opening Consolation Playoff Match

July 16, 2010

Canadian men win opening consolation playoff match at volleyball world sitting championships

EDMOND, Oklahoma – Greg Stewart of Kamloops, B.C., earned 11points to lead the Canadian men’s team to a 25-9, 25-19, 23-25, 25-20 victory over South Korea in its opening consolation playoff match at the 23-country world championships in sitting volleyball for athletes with a disability.

With the victory the Canada remains in contention for a 13th place finish. Its next match is against Morocco on Saturday and the winner from that match will play for the consolation title and 13th spot on Saturday night.

“We want to win the consolation round and that’s the way we played tonight,” said Jose Rebelo of St-Hubert, Que. “We never lost confidence because we were beating ourselves more than the opposition was beating us in the round robin.”

The Canadian men went 1-3 in the round robin this past week.

The other men’s team members are Chad Drummond, Austin Hinchey and Doug Learoyd, all of Edmonton, Kevin Strybosch of London, Ont., Eric Dechaine of St. Lina, Alta., Wilfredo Morewilson of Toronto, and Mikael Bartholdy of Calgary.

The Canadian women opened their consolation playoff round later Friday against Brazil.
