Kendra Wayling will be returning to familiar territory when she suits up for the UBC Okanagan Heat women‘s volleyball team this fall.
Not only is Kelowna the site of some of her most dynamic athletic performances while with the Wildcats at Mount Sentinel Secondary School in South Slocan, but she‘ll also be playing alongside longtime rival Alex Basso.
The two went head to head in memorable provincial senior 1A high school volleyball tournaments in Kelowna, and also clashed at B.C. School Sports basketball championships.
In fact, Wayling was voted the provincial tournament most valuable player in the 2008 BCSS volleyball tournament, and earned MVP honors at the 2007 and 2008 provincial basketball tourneys in Kelowna, even through her team lost to Immaculata in the championship game in 2007.
Recruited to play both volleyball and basketball at North Idaho College, Wayling has decided to return to B.C. to play with the Heat after a season south of the border.
"I was very excited when I found out that Steve (head coach Manuel) needed another player at such a late date because the volleyball program is so strong and heading toward the CIS level," said the 5-foot-10 middle/powerhitter. "I know that Steve is hoping to have me play a dual role of middle and outside and I‘m excited about the opportunity to improve in both positions."
And Manuel is just as enthusiastic about having Wayling on board as the team aims for its third consecutive national championship.
"Kendra is an exciting addition to our program. She‘s a great athlete and an outstanding student. Her maturity will be a great asset and with the departure of middle blocker Sara Zaytsoff, she‘ll have the ability to step in and make an immediate impact."
