Beach round-up: Sparkling start for Canadian pair at world youth beach volleyball championships



Quick exit for Canadians at World Tour stop



PORTO, Portugal – Aaron Nusbaum of Aurora, Ont., and Grant O’Gorman of Toronto won their three matches in qualifying on Wednesday to advance to the main draw at the world youth beach volleyball championships.



Nusbaum and O’Gorman, seeded 13th in qualification, defeated a Slovenian pair in three sets, the fourth-seeded Americans in two and took down the 12th seed Latvians in three. They will join compatriots Nick del Bianco of Surrey, B.C., and Garrett May of Toronto who had a bye to the main draw with starts Thursday.



Last year at the world youths, May, playing with another partner, won his three round robin matches in the main draw then lost in the round of 16 playoffs.



In women’s qualifying, Catherine Larose of Blainville, Que., and Sara Robichaud of Gatineau, Que., lost their opening match and were eliminated.



Jennifer Cross and Melissa Humana-Paredes, both of Toronto, have a bye to the main draw. Humana-Paredes competed at last year’s youth worlds and was eliminated in the main draw round robin portion.



Meanwhile in Klagenfurt, Austria, both Canadian entries were stopped in qualifying.



In women’s play, Marie-Andrée Lessard of Ville LaSalle, Que., and Annie Martin of Sherbrooke, Que., opened qualifying with a victory over Natalja Bratuhhina et Polina Bratuhhina of Estonia but lost their second match to Sona Novakova and Tereza Tobiasova of the Czech Republic.



On the men’s side, Christian Redmann and Richard Van Huizen of Toronto lost their opening match in qualifying.
